Abstract

The nature protection and human agency in the landscape are in constant dispute over environmental and socio-economic interests. The socio-economic activities take place at the expense of nature, while we recognise the need to nourish the environment and climate. To do so, we first need to gain an understanding of landscape limitations, optimal land uses and activities. The project EnviroPlus developed and implemented methodologies to assess landscapes in the face of social and environmental challenges..In this contribution we present the results from testing new approaches in the town of Veľký Šariš. A team of experts in landscape ecology, urbanism, architecture, and social science worked collaboratively to provide complex strategies and solutions. Field research, mapping, surveying, focus groups with experts and residents, and document reviews, produced robust knowledge about local environment, actors and activities. This has resulted in an integrated landscape and urban strategy – the MÚSES+ document – compiling a comprehensive assessment of the current state and future direction for development of Veľký Šariš, focusing on its natural and social assets. The MÚSES+ is demonstrating possible ways of extending landscape ecology approaches to address and tackle not only environmental but also wider social challenges.
