Abstract
The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic belong to the European countries with the highest fragmented structure of the municipalities. This high fragmentation of municipalities has long been discussed. The aim of this the paper is to compare the brief characteristics of the development of very small municipalities up to 200 inhabitants in both countries as a relative phenomenon throughout Europe, their demographic development and geographical concentration for a subsequent discussion on the future development of these territories. While in the Czech Republic 70% of very small municipalities have been growing since 2000 and there is a decrease of municipalities in this size category every year, in Slovakia there is an increasing number of municipalities in this category every year.
