Abstract

The educational structure of Slovak districts is a dynamic system that has been formed over a long period of time and continues to dynamically change. This paper focuses on a specific population group – rural population – and its educational structure in the period of 1991 - 2011. In the past (prior to 1989), rural residents had predominantly primary or secondary education, often without completed exit examination. The gradual availability of better education has changed the educational structure. In addition, over the past 20 years, Slovak countryside has faced a relatively new element - a process of suburbanization that results in a gradual growth of the share of high school and university-educated people in rural areas. Therefore, we expect major changes in the following categories of education: Rural population with primary education, Secondary education without exit examination (only final practical exam), Secondary education with exit examination and higher education.
