Abstract

In this paper we analyze the changes in the use of land resources in the Nitra Self-governing Region after Slovakia’s accession to the EU in the period of years 2004 and 2014. There was a decrease in the structure of agricultural land in all categories while the structure of non-agricultural land recorded an increase in all its categories. After Slovakia joined the European Union, the trend of increase in other areas has begun to dominate for which the decrease was typical in the pre-accession period. This results in the formation of the so-called white areas and the gradual abandonment of agricultural land. We deal with the changes in the use of agricultural land between 2004 and 2014 at the level of municipalities in Nitra Self-governing Region in more detail. We study the development of increases and decreases of agricultural, arable land, permanent crops and permanent grasslands. We deal with land consolidation as a result of housing and civic amenity, industrial activity and construction, transport, forestation and grassing of agricultural land, and we also deal with covering of agricultural land for nonagricultural purposes.
