Abstract
Changes in the content of geographic education have been conditioned on socio-political events in 1989 and the split of Czechoslovakia. Content of geographic education in elementary and secondary schools has been changed also due to the transformation of education once the Slovak republic became a part of European Union. The national education program determines content and scope of the subjects and schools have gained the opportunity to create their own educational program. For the field of geography the weekly subsidy of classes decreased from 2 to 1 but schools have the possibility to increase this subsidy. Standards of education and practical knowledge are now being emphasized. For geography it means focusing the attention on local knowledge and teaching geography for practical life. Future development provides the possibility to change the structure and arrange the geographic themes for all primary school grades.
