Abstract

This paper focuses on the international co-operation of Slovak cities. As decentralised form of international relations it developed into typical and important part of local self-government activities. After the period of regulated „friendship cities“ co-operation, during the communist period, it expanded as a sign of freedom, sharing of experiences, peace building and integration after 1989. However, the most significant growth we can observe within the last decade, thanks to its strong ties to cross-border co-operation with cities in neighbouring countries.

Keywords: cities, international co-operation, twinning, sister cities, partnership, local self-government, cross-border co-operation
