Abstract

Religious tourism and pilgrimage occupy an important place in the lives of the faithful of the East Slovakia and Prešov region. The wealth of localizing preconditions within this region is the source of inspiration for many kinds and forms of religious, sacral and excursion tourism in general. Local religious tourism exists mainly on the basis of the organization via the Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic Church, to a smaller extent also via the Orthodox Church. This article includes the typology of the centers of religious tourism in the Prešov region. The most important regional range and attendance among sacral-religious attractions are particularly attributed to the local Marian pilgrim places such as Ľutina, VeľkýŠariš, Sabinov and Obišovce. Other pilgrim places are linked with the cult of St. Ann (Ovčie – Kluknava), St. Cross and St. Joseph (Prešov). The youngest worship belongs to Blessed bishop Pavol Peter Gojdič and Blessed bishop Hopko in St. John the Baptist´s cathedral in Prešov, as well as in RuskéPekľany where Blessed bishop P. P. Gojdič was baptized. Local religious tourism is connected with patrons of local shrines. The most frequent auspices in the Prešov region are St. Michael the archangel, St. Martin the bishop of Tours (Lipany, Kapušany), St. Nicolas the bishop (Prešov, Široké), Sts. Cosmas and Damian (Ostrovany, Fulianka), Sts. Cyril and Methodius (Suchá Dolina), St. John the Baptist (Prešov), St. Catherine of Alexandria (Terňa, VyšnáŠebastová, Rokycany), St. Demetrius (Hanigovce, Ražňany) or the auspices of All the Holy, St. Trinity, etc.
