Abstract

The contribution deals with the problem of commercial suburbanisation in the area of the city Banská Bystrica, where it maps the most eminent territories affected by this process. In the first part the article states basic features of commercial suburbanisation as important transformational process of contemporary Slovak cities. The contribution includes pieces of information about “brownfields” areas, about their positives, negatives, limiting factors of utilisation and about the possibilities of revitalization in the context of regulation of commercial suburbanisation. It evaluates the changes of built-up areas, and the use of land in consequence of commercial suburbanisation in the time period from 1992 to 2010 and from 1997 to 2010.
