Abstract

Water plays a key role in formation of the karstic regions. Due to human activities, both surface water and karstic water is organically polluted. This pollution was acknowledged already in the 17th century when the number of people and the extent of their activities (such as mining of minerals and woods and building of settlements) increased considerably. Analysis of the development of the human population between 1869 and 2015 proves this point. The increase in human population has been most dynamic since the beginning of the 21st century due to the trend of suburbanization. Unfortunately, building of sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants is not able to keep up with the increase in the number of houses. In 2015, 42.1% of the municipalities in the Moravian Karst did not have a wastewater treatment plant. Currently, municipal wastewater from municipalities without wastewater treatment plants seem to be the most serious source of organic pollutants in the Moravian Karst.
