Abstract

The language is one of the most important symbol of the nation. In terms of the enclave and diaspora the language gets to the position of determining element of identity, and in a broader sense it gets to the position of „drive motor“ of the culutre. In this paper our attention is drawn to the Slovak minority in Romania, particularly to the counties of Arad, Bihor, Salaj a Timis. We will approach its brief historical develpoment and functioning in multiethnic enviroment. The fundamental base is the confrontational aspect of the linguistic and ethnic situation, in which our starting point is the final version of census data of Romania from 2002 to 2011. During processing census data mathematical and cartograpic methods will be used. The next part of our work is the question of Slovak language and its dialectical variety, which is considered to be the mother tongue of Slovak minority in Romania.
