Abstract
Pension systems are part of social insurance. The pension system should provide adequate living standards of citizens in the post - productive age, but also should not to excessive burdens the public finances. The paper characterizes the pension system in the Slovak Republic, which has undergone significant reform. Key requirements for long-term operation of this system are sustainability and stability. Major impact on the sustainability of the pension system has demographic trends of society. The paper on the basis of demographic projections analyzes the different factors influencing sustainability of the pension system: retirement age, the amount of contributions for retirement insurance and extent of salary replacement. At the end of paper we are recommended more parametric changes of the pension system.
