The Use of the Concept of "Conceptual Basis" in Students' Adaptation To Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Teacher Training Programme

Abstract

Students with different levels of their knowledge and from different types of schools are beginning their studies under Geography teacher training programme at present. Their knowledge of Geography with regard to the contents of educational programme ISCED 3A (ŠPÚ 2016) varies from excellent to average or below average. In cooperation with the Department of Geography, TU in Liberec, we have been using an adaptation programme for several years to balance the level of students. The original idea of the programme was to get the level of students beginning their studies in balance, to compare the achieved results, measure them, and on their basis, modify the activities of the programme. However, the comparison based on the diversity of the programme’s activities and the conditions of implementation of the programme was not sufficiently significant. Therefore, based on experiences gained from several activities implemented within the programme’s framework, we have proposed a new model of activities of the entrance test and preparation for it, which would include engagement and cooperation of students throughout the whole activity, beginning with the debate on the assignment up to the evaluation of results and modification of the activity. The second innovation introduced the use of structural analysis of questions to construct standardized and comparable tests. The third fundamental innovation included the use of the concept of "conceptual basis".
