Abstract

The article deals with the population of Slovakia from the point of view of the second demographic transition. The first demographic transition was characterized by the shift from the extensive type of the demographic reproduction - when a lot of children were born but only a few of them reached the adult age - to the intensive type when few children are born and vast majority of them reaches the adult age. The most typical feature of the second demographic transition is the change in the family values and reproduction behavior and the shift in the system of values in general. A relatively easy access to birth control treatment caused changes in traditional moral norms. Furthermore the status of marriage decreased significantly despite dominant Christian catholic tradition among the Slovak population.

Keywords: population, second demographic transition, basic demographic characteristics, changes in family and reproductive behavior, declined credit marriage
