Abstract

The base of energetics in the Upper Nitra region consists of thermal power plant ENO Zemianske Kostoľany and smaller heating plant in Handlová. The most loaded part of environment by this industry is air, which is loaded mostly by the sulphur dioxide and particular matters emissions. Intensity of industrial activities causes enormous pollution of air, water and soils especially before the year 1989. During socialistic industrialization, there was an insufficiency of the methods of environmental protection. In recent 20 years, this pollution significantly decreases thanks to implementation of various environmental rules. In spite of this, there are some hazardous relicts of previous industrial activities, that required to be reclaimed (e.g. ash dumps represent long-term potential risk for soil and water or environmental loads). Nowadays, the significant part of ash materials is turned into various industrially useful materials. Development of the regional energetics, and thus its environmental impacts in the future will be driven mainly by the national policy of energetics and coal mining strategies.
