Abstract

Mountainous landscape of Jáchymov was affected by two significant processes after the second World War: the expulsion of German population and the rapid development of uranium mining. Underground mining of ore containing uranium was associated with the opening of new and old mines, construction of manufacturing buildings and the gradual development of massive anthropogenic shapes - waste rock of mining pits. Need for manpower for the uranium industry was solved by recruitment of civil workers, but also by the work of tens of thousands of prisoners concentrated in labor prison camps. With the closure of uranium mining these concentration camps have been disposed. This article is dedicated to the current state of extraction spaces and concentration camps in the Jáchymov.

Keywords: post-industrial landscape, uranium mining, Jáchymov, prison camps, concentration camps, landuse change
